“Off The Grid” in San Francisco is Off The Hook!

A text at 6:00pm Friday night sent me off on a new adventure…one that I never imagined.  A friend invited me to join in checking out the food trucks in Fort Mason.  I never heard of such a thing and so I thought, why not?  So glad that I did.  “Off The Grid” is a new Friday night market at Fort Mason on Fridays 5:00pm-10:00pm with over 30 participating vendors.

Parking for Fort Mason was already full so we parked at the marina and walked over.  Such a gorgeous night but WINDY and COLD!!!

We arrived around 7:30pm and the lines were already crazy!  The word is out for this culinary event.

We started at NamuSF for round one…

French fries with short ribs, Korean sauces, and kimchi.  Interesting flavors together.

Next up from Namu was Okonomiyaki, a gooey Japanese pancake topped with a fried egg.  Very tasty!

Our strategy quickly became to buy food from one vendor and then queue up in line at another.  Next up was CurryUpNow for chicken tikka masala burritos and samosas.

The burritos were tasty…warm and hearty on a cold San Francisco night.  A little too filling if you are looking to samples more items.

CurryUpNow had the longest line in the joint and were already out of a few items.

My favorite of the evening wound up being Hapa SF for modern Filipino cuisine.

These sig sig pork tacos were AH-MAZING.  Fresh and delicious with hints of citrus, radish, cilantro.  I’ll be craving these tacos for a while.  My first stop next time.

What meal is complete without a little sweet ending?  There is this adorable cupcake truck, Cupkates.

Mexican chocolate cupcake?  Yes please!

The crowd is really fun, good energy.  There is a band and cocktails for sale.  Remember, the more people who you go with the more items you get to taste!   Next time I’m trying the pork hot dog from Brass Knuckle most definitely!

For more information on upcoming markets, check out the Off The Grid website http://offthegridsf.com/ and see a great write-up in the Chronicle…http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/04/13/DDO21IUCMB.DTL

  1. LOVE this Kari…. how fun! We had a similar thing here in Sacramento (if you can believe it.. haha) and had a lot of SF trucks. it was called the Sacto Mo Fo (mobile food)! Loved seeing what you had… we didn’t even get out of the car because we had the boys and people were waiting over an hour… maybe we will hit up the SF one sometime! Thanks for the great post!!!!
