I have such fond memories of Colombe d’ Or or “The Golden Dove” in the medeival town of St. Paul de Vence, France.  The town and the hotel/restaurant are a MUST visit.

What makes this place so special?  The same family owns the hotel where starving artists such as Picasso,  Matisse, Chagall, and Braque exchanged paintings for meals back in the day. The result…you can dine on traditional country fare in the original farmhouse in front of murals, sketches, and watercolors by the worlds greatest Romantics and early Modernists.

I always speak of how important layers are to a home and interior and Colombe d’Or has it all, layers of old paint, murals, worn furniture, leather cushions and modern artwork.

While you are there visit the extraordinary Maeght Foundation museum of contemporary and modern art, designed to harmonize with the natural surroundings.

St. Paul de Vence, Colombe d’ Or, and Maeght Foundation…true national treasures!
